Thought for the day

The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you.

“Inspiration” is a holdover from an earlier era, when it was thought that any idea worth its weight originated from a deep, inaccessible place in the mind or soul. You’re not an artist, musician or writer. You’re a worker, a drone, a production slave, no different from the accountant or carpenter down the street. Your job is to get shit accomplished, to get shit on paper or on canvas. And the act of producing will generate inspiration–always. If nobody had ever taught me the idea that I had to wait for inspiration to accomplish anything, my production would be as twice as high as it is now.

Don’t think about art or painting or music. Make it. Get it done.
